War Stories - by Art Giberson

Despite all the great accomplishments mankind made during the 20th century—invention of the automobile, the airplane, nuclear-power, space flight, putting a man on the moon and numerous advancements in medicine and science—the 20th century, in all likelihood, will be recalled by future historians as a century of war.

From the American Revolutionary War to the present American military personnel, conscripts and volunteers have placed their lives on the line in the name of freedom. The personal story of each of those warriors is different—yet they are the same. These are the stories of the heroes who fought America's battles— personal stories that need to be preserved for future generations.

War Stories is a series of personal war time accounts, told by wartime veterans of World II, Korea, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam and Desert Storm (the first war with Iraq). The veterans presented in War Stories include officers and enlisted men and women from all branches of the armed forces: Regular military, Reservists and National Guardsmen. They had served as infantrymen, aviators, submariners, combat photographers, cooks, supply technicians, gunners and engineers.

Included in the group were several former prisoners of war—one of which spent the entire war as a POW in Japan. Another participant was a member of the Women's Royal Australian Air Force who later migrated to the United States as a war bride. A World War II widow tells of the cruel circumstances of her husband's death at the hands of the enemy while being held as prisoner of war.

Sadly, several of the veterans who shared their stories for this narrative have fought their last skirmish and now rest in peace.
