Anything but the Truth - Sequel to Photojounalist by Art Giberson

The late afternoon sun cast a golden hue on the shiny black panels of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Hundreds of people milled about, speaking softly and gently touching the name of a loved one or fellow veteran. Others made rubbings of names and placed objects: snapshots, toys, medals, model airplanes, even a six pack of Budweiser — at the base of the black granite panels.

At panel 23W, a slender, red-haired vet searched in earnest for the names of fellow warriors he had last seen aboard a small patrol boat on the Rung Sat River in South Vietnam. Despite the sun’s warm rays a chill spread over Ty Stephens as his eyes came to rest on the name of Tyler Martin.

Rummaging through a worn, battered brownish-green camera bag Stephens retrieved a tattered envelope, yellowed by age, from the bottom of the bag with the inscription, Lt.(jg) Tyler “Weasel” Martin, hastily scribbled across the front. Gently removing six strips of 35mm black and white negatives, he carefully studied each negative, returned them to the envelope and placed the envelope at the base of Panel 23W. Long repressed grief finally took over and battle-hardened combat photographer Ty Stephens openly wept.
